by Vanester M. Williams

Laura has inherited her grandmother’s faith. Believing that grace can include her is another matter.

WHY WE PICKED IT

The harder question underneath the mystery.

One of the published passages brings Laura’s fear into focus. Speaking to Tina, she wonders whether God could still love and forgive her after a night she remembers with shame. That is a different kind of suspense from discovering who wants to hurt her. It asks whether she can imagine a future in which her past does not have the final word.

Laura grew up without knowing her father’s name, and a stranger’s information unsettles her understanding of who she is. Yet she also carries the lessons of the grandmother who raised her. Those two parts of the premise belong together. A family history can leave painful gaps while a person within that family gives you something worth holding on to.

The reason we chose this book is the difficulty of making inherited faith your own. Remembering Mama’s teaching does not make Laura’s fear disappear. Readers interested in Christian fiction can approach her question alongside Romans 8:38–39, a passage about the reach of God’s love. That is our suggested reading-group connection, rather than a claim that the novel quotes those verses.

Read this one with people willing to distinguish forgiveness from pretending that harm never happened. Laura’s story gives that conversation a person to follow, with a mystery around her and uncertainty within her. The opening volume also leads into Legacy of a Praying Mama, where the family’s story continues.

Selection note based on the published excerpt passages in the Independent Author Network profile and the author’s description. The Romans connection is our editorial suggestion.
