Zelie Bellerose wants her children to have a future in a free France. That wish takes her into the Resistance and eventually into the leadership of an intelligence network. It is a difficult premise for a mother: the work she undertakes for her children's sake also places their safety, and her presence in their lives, under threat.

The romance brings another kind of trust into that situation. Marcel Laurent, a concert pianist and former prisoner of war, conducts a youth orchestra while gathering intelligence; his broadcasts also carry coded messages. Music gives the two a shared language, even as their work requires concealment. For readers drawn to love stories under pressure, the attraction is in that difficulty of opening yourself to someone when secrecy has become part of survival.
White drew on the life of Resistance leader Marie-Madeleine Fourcade, fictionalizing and compressing events for the novel.
