Fat Dogs and French Estates: Part 1

by Beth Haslam

A search for a French estate puts a retirement dream, a marriage and two travelling dogs on the same itinerary.

WHY WE PICKED IT

The dream has to survive the journey

It is easy to picture a different life when the picture contains only the destination. Beth Haslam's first Fat Dogs and French Estates memoir starts earlier, with the work of trying to find that place. As retirement approaches, Beth and her husband Jack plan to buy a second home with land in France. Thirteen shortlisted estates seem to offer thirteen versions of a future they might want.

The search sends them across thousands of kilometres with their two dogs. Property viewings, unfamiliar customs and eccentric owners turn a practical itinerary into a comic travel story. Beth's published introduction makes clear that this volume concerns the hunt for an estate. Readers should expect the uncertainties of getting there, rather than begin assuming the couple are already comfortably settled in their French home.

We chose it because a shared dream can reveal very different ideas of what would make life better. A couple may agree on moving yet disagree about almost everything a particular property would require. That gives book clubs something to discuss beneath the travel humour: what can we compromise on, and what do our reactions to an imperfect place reveal about the life we actually want?

The dogs keep the adventure grounded in obligations that do not disappear when people set out for a new beginning. For readers considering later-life change, that is a useful point of connection. This is a light-hearted personal memoir and the beginning of a continuing series, not a current guide to French property law or a complete account of the eventual move. Choose it for the company, the mishaps and the conversation about turning an attractive possibility into a workable life.

Editorial selection based on the author's Part 1 description and biography, Ant Press's catalogue entry and reader responses. This is a recommendation note, not a full-book review.
